A Brief History of the Acorn Stakes
The Acorn Stakes was first established in 1931 at the legendary Belmont Park. The 1-mile race features the best 3-year-old fillies in horse racing and rewards winners with a hefty purse of $750,000. Followed by the Coaching Club American Oaks and the Alabama Stakes, the Acorn Stakes serves as the first leg of the Triple Tiara, a prestigious title for fillies and counterpart to the Triple Crown. While Belmont has been home to the Acorn Stakes for a majority of its running’s, for two brief periods of time (1960 to 1967 and 1969 to 1975) the race was moved to Aqueduct Racetrack. For 2024, the race will be run at a changed distance of 1 1/16 miles at Saratoga due to Belmont Park renovations.
Several Acorn Stakes winners have gone on to be crowned US champions in that same year, including Cicada (1962), Dark Mirage (1968), Susan’s Girl (1972), and Davona Dale (1979).
