The Coronation Stakes was established 1840, and the Group 1 race for 3-year-old fillies is run at Ascot Racecourse over a distance of 1,603 meters (1 mile). The race title commemorates the Coronation of a new British monarch, Queen Victoria in 1838. The race features Europe’s best 3-year-old fillies on the turf, and is held on the fourth day of the 5-day Royal Ascot meeting.

The Coronation usually features fillies which ran previously in the English 1,000 Guineas, the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches or the Irish 1,000 Guineas. In 2017, heavy favorite Winter (4-9) prevailed in the Coronation Stakes, and she entered off effortless wins in the Irish and English 1000 Guineas races.

Winter’s 2017 win marked the 13th time in the last 15 runnings of the Coronation that a filly priced 6-1 or less has won the race. The biggest priced winner since 2000 was Fallen for You at 12-1 in 2012.
