About The Hampton Court Stakes of Royal Ascot
The Hampton Court Stakes is a Group 3 race for 3-year-olds on the turf and held each June at Ascot Racecourse during the five day Ascot meet. The race has been run under several different titles, but became the Hampton Court Stakes in 2002 when the Royal Ascot meet was extended to five days. Named after Hampton Court, a royal residence of the Tudor period, the race was ungraded until 1999 and then remained Listed until being award Group 3 status in 2011.
Run at a distance of 2,002 meters (1 mile and 2 furlong), the Hampton Court Stakes is held on day 3 of the Ascot meet and as of 2017 carries a purse of £90,000 ($125,000).
The Hampton Court Stakes has most often been a very competitive race and also shown the potential to produce future stars. Both 2015 and 2016 winners Time Test and Hawkbill subsequently stepped up in class to claim Group 2 and Group victories. And 2017 Hampton Court winner Benbatl captured a Grade 2 in 2018 and just missed a Grade 1 win the following race.
Some of the horses in the Hampton Court Stakes run in the Derby trials. The most-famous winners of the Hampton Court Stakes include Sadeem (1986), Collection (2008), and Charlie Appleby’s Hawkbill (2016).
