Wood Memorial Stakes Winners
The Wood Memorial, the premier race at Aqueduct and New York’s leading Triple Crown prep, has yielded several stylish performances over the past 10 years.
I Want Revenge (2009) and Eskendereya (2010) were considered Kentucky Derby favorites after scoring in the Wood, but neither wound up breaking from the gate at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May after developing infirmities.
Verrazano won impressively in 2013 and later captured the Haskell Invitational before embarking a moderately successful campaign in Europe as a four-year-old. Frosted (2015) later finished second to Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in the Belmont Stakes and won the Pennsylvania Derby.
Wood Memorial Past Winners
The Wood Memorial Stakes is a Grade-II stakes race hosted by Aqueduct Racetrack. It is a major prep race for the Kentucky Derby and covers 1 1/8th miles (9 furlongs) over dirt. This highly regarded race also carries a purse of $1,000,000.
