Race Preview Bluffs Run: Iowa Breeders Classic Semi Final - Wednesday October 30, 2013
There was more than one surprise in the quarter finals of the Iowa Breeders Classic and one cliffhanger of a race that saw Boc's C U Again turn a trailing position on the first turn into a romp with a five length win at the end. The surprise was the fourth place finish of SH Avatar, ranked at the top of the standings at Bluffs Run for wins. He still has 36 points which puts him second to Boc's C U Again with a perfect 45, but he'll have to finish in the first five positions in the semi finals if he wants a berth in the finals.
Tied for third in the standings with 35 points are Boc's Sluicey and Coopers Combat. Also tied for third place with 33 points are DS Libra and Akiyama. DS Libra posted the best finish time of the semi finals with her win.
Five greyhounds are tied with 31 points for fourth position on the points ladder. LT Jivin Jake, Boc's Happy Phil, Proven History, GV Erin and Top Of The Pile.
This time around, the stakes races take place in races 1, 2 and 3.
In Race 1, the morning line favorite is 4-Coopers Combat from the McKim Kennel. He won from the 4 box in a hard fought race in the first round of this series, but has only managed 2 seconds since then, although one was only by a neck. 1-Boc's Happy Phil beat him last time out and may use the advantageous 1 box to do it again.
An interesting possible longshot is 8-Chipper in the first. He has some sub 30-second times there and one of them was from the 8 box in Grade A. If he can employ some early hustle and get himself well placed on the first turn, look for him to be in the mix, if not in the lead.
In Race 2, 2-SH Avatar needs to live up to the 5/2 morning line favorite status he has and get some good racing luck to make up for his last very troubled trip. He was blocked early and then stumbled trying to find racing room in that race, but still managed to finish within two lengths of the winner. He doesn't give up.
4-DS Libra has proven herself from the outside and the inside with impressive finishes from both positions. She has some good times there and is one determined lady. She's between two dogs that break more slowly than she does, so she might just be able to get a jump on the field in this one.
7-Top Of The Pile has a tough post position to overcome, but has to be considered for exotics if nothing else. 1-Boc's King Loopy has surprised before and likes the inside posts, so keep an eye on the odds.
In Race 3, all eyes will be on 4-Boc's C U Again, the point leader who is undefeated in this series. He won his last two races by five lengths and won the one before that by a length and a half and shows no signs of giving in to pressure from any dog in this field. Can he do it again?
8-Boc's Sluicey out of Flying Coal City is very happy in the 8 box at Bluffs Run. That's where he won the Secretary's Choice from back in September. Will it be the box that he wins the semi finals race in this series from? 7-Answer Seeker might want to take advantage of that and hang onto Sluicey's coattails all the way to the wire.
This is a tough race to handicap, because there are so many outstanding greyhounds in it. 6-Boc's Billy Ray and 3-Proven History are certainly capable of killer speed and just need a little room and a lot of luck to stage an upset here.
As always, safe trips and good racing luck to all the greyhounds on tonight's program. Don't forget to watch and wager and get your free greyhound programs on Bet America, where bonus tracks pay rewards.
