Race Preview Northlands Harness Park: Premier Filly Pace 2nd Division - $25,000 - Friday October 25, 2013
Race 8 at Northlands Park on Friday, October 25th is the 2nd Division of the Premiers Filly Pace for Two Year Olds. The morning line favorite is at 8/5, but I think there might be a better value play for those who aren't averse to taking a bit of a risk. Then again, any wager on two year old fillies is a large risk, considering the volatile nature of the female equines at that young age.
I don't know how many times I've had to wait while they all got organized behind the gate or for a recall when one of them broke stride before the gate. However, I console myself by being glad that it's not a thoroughbred race for two year old fillies, where you're lucky if one of them doesn't throw its jockey or flip in the gate.
Sweet Sugar, in the 1 post, is the morning line favorite at 8/5. Out of Tajma Hall and Life Sign, this filly has certainly racked up an impressive record in her short career. She's had four wins out of seven races this year, with one second and a third. So, she's only been out of the money once.
I also noticed that she's as good on an off track as on a fast track, with one win and one second on an off track. She's driven for the second time today by Travis Cullen, who won with her last time out. Trainer, Timothy Brown, has 29% for 2 year old wins and is in the money with them 54% of the time for a UTR of .420. Her dam and sire are both producers of winning 2 year olds also.
Second in the morning line at 2/1 is Nighttraintovegas in post 6. She's out of Camystic and Freedom's Pass. This filly's season's best at AD was an impressive 155 and she actually beat Sweet Sugar in a schooling race back in July. She does have one of the more problematic posts at Northlands, but her early gate speed should get her out in time to get good position. Brandon Campbell drives for Richard Schneider and has had her in the money almost 75% of the time in her career for five out of seven wins with two seconds.
Shark Festival, in the advantageous 5 post, could be the sleeper here at 3/1 in the morning line. She gets out early enough to be in the frontrunners, but also has enough left in the tank to close in the stretch. She's out of Shadow Play and Cam's Card Shark. In their last outing, she beat Lasttraintovegas, who came in second to her. She's been a contender in higher level races than this one also. I wouldn't leave her out of the exotics. That's for sure.
Make Three Wishes in the 3 post at 5/1 seems to be one of those "always a bridesmaid, never a bride" horses that gets a piece of the exotics more often than she wins. However, back in August, she beat both Sweet Sugar and Dream N Of Mona by four lengths, and she's prevailed over Blue Monday twice. Bobby Clark drives for Keith Clark and they both have decent records with two year olds.
Marilyn Merlot in the 4 post at 8/1 seems to be struggling even at lower levels, so she may be one of those fillies that doesn't blossom until her third year. While Blue Monday in the 7 post at 10/1 is moving up in class and will have to overcome a difficult post position and also run much faster than she ever has to hit the board.
Dream N Of Mona in the 2 post at 12/1 has two seconds and a first out of her 8 lifetime races and is out of If I Can Dream and No Nukes. No Nukes is a proven sire of two year olds, so she may have some potential that hasn't been realized yet. Kelly Hoerdt drives and trains and has had good luck with 2 year olds in the past.
There are three more feature races on tonight's card at Northlands. In the 7th race, the First Division of the Premier Filly Pace will run. The 10th and 11th races feature the Premier Colts 1st and 2nd Division.
As always, safe trips and good racing luck to all the horses and drivers on tonight's card at Northlands. Remember to watch and wager on Bet America where bonus tracks pay rewards.
