Race Preview The Meadowlands: $512,000 TVG Free For All Series Championship on Saturday November 30, 2013
Can the Captain prevail against older champions? That's the question that will be answered when Captaintreacherous goes up against older world champion horses in Saturday's $512,000 TVG FFA Series Championship at The Meadowlands.
With rivals like Foiled Again and Pet Rock gunning for him, the rising star will have his hoofs full trying to show that he has what it takes to beat the big boys. They'll be racing at the newly remodeled New Jersey track where the finish line is now where the backstretch was, if that makes any difference to a horse.
It seems to have made a difference for Foiled Again, or something has, because he won there last weekend, giving him just two wins out of thirty six races there. His driver thinks it's because he does much better in the fall than he does in the summer months, which a look back through his record seems to substantiate. Whatever the reason, it makes him a tougher foe for Captaintreacherous and the rest of the top caliber field.
Pet Rock is the morning line favorite at 2/1. The recent winner of the American National starts from the 3 post and has had 12 races at The Meadowlands with 3 wins and 5 seconds.
Foiled Again is at 5/2 in the morning line and is right beside Pet Rock in the 4 post. Yannick Gingras thinks that he'll do well from that post and has confidence in his ability to handle the mile track. The 9 year old won by a neck here last time out.
If Warrawee Needy was in a better post, instead of the 9 post, I'd recommend him as a longshot for exotics. Ditto for Golden Receiver who is in the 7 post, not a beneficial one. They both have hit the board in races with similar pars and have a good turn of speed at times.
Bolt The Duer in the 10 post will have his work cut out for him to get into position for any attempt at a stretch move. He's a good horse, but I don't think he's up to winning this one, although he might be there for a piece of the exotic pie.
Sweet Lou in the 5 post has a good post for paces at The Meadowlands and might be a good longshot play here. He's got some good times back along and has won 4 out of 10 races here. With morning line odds of 10/1, you might want to keep an eye on the board a little before post time.
Dynamic Youth in the 1 post has had 8 races here and won 1 and showed in 1. He'll have Ron Pierce trying to hustle him into contention, but may be outclassed here. However, I never, ever count out a Bettor's Delight gelding.
Modern Legend is 0 for 8 at The Meadowlands and I don't expect him to suddenly take a liking to the track. Bettor's Edge, another Bettor's Delight gelding, is another of Ron Burke's entries, has a trainer switch from Linda Toscano and a driver switch from Ron Pierce to Andy Miller. Interesting. However, unless Burke has figured out how to improve the gelding's speed numbers and times, he's not up to beating this field.
